Apple’s WWDC 2017

Apple’s WWDC 2017 is underway and a large number of announcements were made today. Below you will find the most interesting unveilings for today.

iOS 11 – For iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro Models, iPad fifth generation, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch sixth generation

  • Apple Pay expanding to include person-to-person payments
  • Newly design Control Center
  • Speed limits, lane guidance, and Do Not Disturb mode while driving for Maps app
  • Augmented reality directly built into iOS
  • Camera app improvements, including a new format (HEIF) to shrink the amount of storage that photos take
  • New dock and drag-and-drop features for iPads
  • New Files app for iPads
  • First beta now available to developers, public beta coming later this summer

HomePod

  • Main focus is music with Siri integration
  • Speaker contains an upward-facing woofer
  • Can set alarms, timers, and reminders, send texts through Messages app, control devices through HomeKit, read the news, sports, traffic, stocks, and weather reports
  • Can connect to HomeKit to control lights, blinds, locks, and other accessories
  • Powered by A8 chip, the same processor found inside latest iPhones
  • Just under 7 inches tall
  • Detects its location with “spatial awareness” to provide quality audio
  • Can play playlists, radio stations, and other content found within Apple Music
  • Launches in December, releasing first in US, UK, and Australia
  • Available in white and space gray

Siri Improvements

  • New male and female voices
  • On-device learning system – learns user habits and can suggest apps, news, and other content
  • Live translations between English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish, with more to come in the following months
  • New integration with third-party apps allowing Siri to be used for banking, chatting, and other features
  • Better contextual awareness
