FILMS TO MAKE YOU FESTIVE: How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Welcome to Second Union’s “Films To Make You Festive“. For the majority of December, Second Union will be talking about our favorite “festive films” in an attempt to get our readers ready for the holiday season. Expect action, adventure and all the nostalgia a Christmas period can possibly produce!

It’s Christmas Time! There’s no need to be afraid. At Christmas Time, we at Second Union like to let in light, and banish shade! After Thursday’s introduction to this year’s Films To Make You Festive, we thought it be best to take the next evolutionary step in Festive Movies after Love Actually. So, naturally, next on the list is Ron Howard’s 2000 hit: How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Clearly.

Portrayed by the opulent Jim Carrey, Dr Seuss’ Grinch is brought to life in the most extraordinary of fashions. Set within a town completely enamoured with Christmas, The Grinch must face up to the Whos that once ridiculed and tortured him as a boy. His idea of revenge? Bring their treasured Christmas to a sudden stop.

From the first scene, The Grinch is not afraid to operate with its tongue firmly placed in cheek. Poking fun at consumer habits during this silly season, as well as the more important environmental issues they will inevitably create.

What endears How The Grinch Stole Christmas so much to me is its willingness to tackle the uglier side of the holidays. All too often movies of this ilk will paint the period as Merry and Jovial, which it obviously is. However, what is lesser shown is the lunacy, greed, and excess it continually warrants from us. In fact, it’s not until Whoville loses everything that they realize what Christmas is all about.

Carrey is at his comedic best in this role, literally chewing the scenery at one point. His introduction to the chair of cheer is a particular favorite of mine, and always certain to raise a chuckle or two in even those with the smallest of hearts. Combine scenes like this with rapid dialogue, hilarious costume/hair design, and sets beyond anything you can comprehend, The Grinch really is a fun festive feast for families and friends to enjoy.
