Over The Garden Wall is a television miniseries created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network. The show centers on two brothers, Wirt (Elijah Wood) and Greg (Collin Dean). At the start of the pilot, they are lost in a forest, which they later learn is called the Unknown. The series follows their journey to make their way back home, and along the way, they meet a talking bird named Beatrice, a mysterious woodsman, and many more odd and funny characters. While it may sound thin, the story is actually very good, and goes deeper than just two boys lost in the woods. It’s also hilarious, with small but funny pieces of dialogue in every episode.
One of the funniest parts of the show is Greg’s naivety. Since he’s very young, he doesn’t have enough experience or wisdom to know exactly what the outcomes of his decisions will be. It leads to some very laugh-out-loud moments. In one episode, he tries to lighten animal students’ moods by adding molasses to their supper and singing a song titled “Potatoes and Molasses“. Unfortunately, he just gets the class in trouble.
The characters are developed well, even though many only appear in one episode. Since time is spent giving those minor characters stuff to do, getting to know and understand them is easier. One of my favorite characters was Greg’s newfound frog, whose name is constantly getting changed by Greg. It communicates by singing, and gave me some scenes where all I could think was “What in the…”
Like I said earlier, the story is very good. It soon deviates from the two boys being lost into short adventures that Wirt and Greg have together. 
In the Unknown, a creature known as the Beast haunts the lost and wandering, and it serves as a worthy antagonist to the brothers, even if it isn’t seen quite often.The animation is also smooth, and is done very well.
Over The Garden Wall is one of the smartest and funniest series I’ve ever seen. It never fails to make me laugh, the animation is done very well, and it has a great story and characters. I’ll say Over The Garden Wall is worthy of an A+. It’s a rock fact!
