Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, offering fans their first look at the next adventure in the blockbuster franchise. This time, the rules have changed in a major way.
After two films that sent players into the dangerous world of Jumanji, Open World flips the concept on its head. Instead of people being pulled into the game, the game itself spills into the real world, unleashing its wild environments, creatures, and unpredictable dangers on an unsuspecting population.
The trailer reunites the beloved avatar lineup of Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan). However, things aren’t exactly business as usual. The four heroes appear to be trapped in what the trailer calls “Demo Mode,” creating plenty of comedic moments as they struggle with glitchy behavior while trying to stop Jumanji’s chaos from spreading.
Returning alongside the core cast are Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, Morgan Turner, Nick Jonas, Danny DeVito, and Awkwafina, with Brittany O’Grady and Burn Gorman joining the franchise for the first time.
According to Sony’s official synopsis, the latest installment follows the heroes as they face their greatest challenge yet after the boundaries between Jumanji and reality collapse. With the game’s dangers no longer confined to a magical console, the group must work together to save both worlds before it’s too late.
Longtime fans of the series will also find plenty of nods to the original 1995 Jumanji starring Robin Williams. Director Jake Kasdan has previously revealed that a subtle tribute to Williams appears throughout the film, with one half of the iconic Jumanji dice hidden somewhere in every scene.
The trailer leans heavily into spectacle, showcasing stampeding wildlife, massive destruction, and the signature blend of action and comedy that helped turn the modern Jumanji films into billion-dollar hits. While many fans are already praising the fresh premise and the chemistry of the returning cast, others have noted that the preview may reveal more of the story than expected.
