This August, pop-punk icons Green Day are leaping onto the big screen with their feature-film debut, one of my most anticipated films of the year, “Nimrods.”
The film is produced by Live Nation Studios, directed by Lee Kirk and is distributed by Inaugural Entertainment. The story follows the fictional band the “Analog Dogs” (Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Faust) on a three-day road trip from Kansas City to Los Angeles to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve after receiving a call from the band’s drummer. Tré Cool. Will they make it to LA before New Year’s? The only problem is that none of the “Analog Dogs” know this opportunity is entirely a prank set up by Tommy’s older brother, Wayne (Keen Ruffalo).
“Nimrods” also stars McKenna Grace, Bobby Lee, and Fred Armisen, and features appearances by Green Day band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool. Green Day have also released the new single “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P” for the soundtrack (out July 31st). Alongside the band’s career-spanning greatest hits and some deep cuts, the soundtrack also features music from Ultra Q, McKenna Grace, The Paradox, and even the film’s own “Analog Dogs.”
The coming-of-age road trip comedy at the heart of the story is based on the chaotic van life and early years of the band, before the release of their breakout 1994 Album Dookie. This film also marks the second time that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has worked with director Lee Kirk, after 2016’s “Ordinary World.”
“I quizzed Billie Joe, Mike and Tre about their own youth, seeking out personal tidbits and stories that could inspire the script.” Lee Kirk said in an official director’s statement. “I then took these anecdotes, twisted and reworked them for my fictional story, threading them into the characters and plot.”
“Nimrods” is only in theaters on August 14th (with a fan event screening on August 11th featuring an introduction from the band and extra live footage), and tickets are on sale now. Check out the poster and key art for the film below.
