Get ready to meet the most sarcastic security unit you’ve ever rooted for. The first trailer for Murderbot, based on Martha Wells’ Hugo and Nebula Award-winning The Murderbot Diaries, has just dropped—and it’s as sharp, darkly funny, and action-packed as fans had hoped.
In a not-so-distant future, Murderbot follows a self-aware security android who’s hacked its own governor module, giving it free will and a healthy disdain for humans—despite being tasked with protecting them. While it would rather be watching soap operas than saving lives, a deadly conspiracy forces Murderbot to confront its past and step into a role it never asked for: hero.
The trailer teases a gritty, sci-fi thriller laced with dark humor and heart, as the titular android grapples with identity, autonomy, and what it means to be human (or not). Visually striking and emotionally resonant, the adaptation promises to honor the bestselling series while bringing new layers to Murderbot’s inner world.
Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård in the title role, with Jessica Henwick, Giancarlo Esposito, and Chiwetel Ejiofor rounding out a stellar cast. The film is directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) and produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
Sci-fi fans, prepare for a new kind of hero—one who’d really rather not be here.
Murderbot is slated for release in late 2025
