RECAP: WICOMICON – 2018

On April 28, hundreds of fans, cosplayers, exhibitors, and celebrity guests came to Baltimore, MD to #SaveTheDay and take part in the WICOMICON Pop-Up convention, a one-day comics and arts festival produced by members of The Nerds of Color, Black Heroes Matter, Carbon-Fibre Media, theblerdgurl, New Release Wednesday, and the Be A Boss App.

Highlighted by some of the leading names in the comic book, arts, and entertainment industries — including Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign, Marvel Comics writer Greg Pak, and stars of the SYFY series The Magicians and Killjoys — WICOMICON welcomed attendees a full day of exhibits, cosplay, musical entertainment, panels, and an overwhelming sense of community.

There was also a WICOMICON game show hosted by Yael Tygiel with cast members from Killjoys and The Magicians and two members from the audience.

The Vendors & Panels

There were plenty of vendors for your pop-culture shopping needs and also featured some of the most acclaimed names in the comic book, arts, and entertainment industries. In addition to dozens of exhibitors, the pop-up convention will also feature panels, cosplay contests, special guests, and a wide variety of food options.

Comedy Show

The Show Presents: Level Up Comedy on WICOMICON’s entertainment stage. It was a funny set and helped to lighten the mood of the postponement Con we shall not mention. Host Glenn Lawrence brought to the stage comedians REEK, Violet Gray, Jemarc Axinto, Victor Guildford, Anthony Wright, Loy Lee and more!

The Neighborhood

WICOMICON was hosted in the eclectic area of Pigtown. Pigtown is neatly nested not that far from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. A nice walk from our hotel to the 1100 WICOMICO building, gave us the opportunity to take a few images of the surrounding area:

The Cosplay

Checking out the cosplay of pop-culture conventions is a favorite past time. At WICOMICON, lots of attendees came dressed in their favorite fandom. Check out our WICOMICON Cosplay and the Cosplay Competition Gallery:

The Night Life

WICOMICON did not disappoint when it came to after the Con entertainment. At the Mex Tequila Bar, attendees got the unique opportunity to participate in karaoke fun with some of the cast members of The Magicians and Killjoys.

That’s a warp for WICOMICON 2018! From the smiles and grins of the attendees and the happy faces of vendors and volunteers, we hope it is enough to bring the fun Pop-Up Con in 2019. Would you attend WICOMICON if it were to happen in 2019? Please let them know via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

On behalf of the WICOMICON team, THANK YOU to the entire community that came out and supported us. In addition, to the many that could not make it out but shared/liked and did their part to show support. WICOMICON was about helping others and coming together. #ConTogether. YOU all did that. We would love to see your pictures and videos from the event. Please feel free to reply post with pics/vids and/or share below or tweet it, Instagram it with the #WICOMICON. Oh and if you want to see what we can do with more time than a week of planning, reply below to encourage us to do it again. LOL ~ Patrick, @strangesince1977.
