Last month, I reviewed Season 1 of Adult Swim’s popular show Rick and Morty. Now, I’ll be taking a look at the equally crazy second season of the show. Let’s get started.
The first season didn’t really end with a cliffhanger. However, Season Two’s first episode still picks up right where Season One left off. Rick, Morty, and Summer have left time frozen for so long while cleaning up, they end up in a decaying dimension and we begin to see separate versions of their dimension whenever they feel uncertain about something. That and many more are some of the funniest moments that make up the cartoon’s second season. Be warned, it’s still not for young kids, but it works tremendously well and ends up being even more hilarious than the first season.
The emotion is also still heavy in Season 2. In the finale, Rick and the Smiths attend Birdperson’s wedding, and it’s revealed that the bride, Summer’s friend Tammy, is a spy for the Galactic Federation and kills Birdperson. The family searches for a planet like Earth, and eventually, Rick turns himself into the Federation. The Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt” put to this scene amplifies the emotion of this scene.
A host of new characters also joins the picture in “Total Rickall” which I consider to be the best out of all of the episodes in both seasons. The episode follows the family as they try to figure out what’s real and what isn’t after alien parasites implant themselves as characters in their brains to make them believe they’ve been there all along. It starts with “Uncle Steve”, but then “Sleepy Gary”, “Tinkles”, and the Frankenstein Monster. Another character who never appeared in any other episodes, Mr. Poopybutthole, also appears and ends up getting shot, mistaken for a parasite, but he was a real family friend the whole time! Brutal and emotional, but also hilarious…
There’s also some new original music in the season, too. In one episode, Fart, a being who wants to destroy all carbon-based lifeforms, sings a song called “Goodbye Moonman.” In another episode, giant heads appear all around the universe, forcing Rick and Morty to rap a song called “Get Schwifty” to save Earth.
THE VERDICT
Season Two of Rick and Morty is even better than the first. With consistent pacing, funny writing, and great emotional elements, this season proves that this cartoon is one of the best on TV. I’m going to give it an A+.
