Rob’s Reviews: DC Comics – Aquaman #6

Welcome to the third installment of Rob’s Reviews! This week I review Aquaman #6, published by DC Comics.

SYNOPSIS: Per DC (http://www.dccomics.com/comics/aquaman-2016/aquaman-6)

“THE DROWNING” conclusion! As this first epic concludes, Aquaman and Mera are on the run for a crime they didn’t commit. They’ve fought through every kind of firepower the U.S. military has thrown. Now all that’s left between them and Atlantis is the Man of Steel…

STORY: First off, let me just say that I believe that Dan Abnett  is one of the most underrated writers in comics. That being said, Aquaman clocking Superman and yelling, “I’M A KING!” made this issue for me. You see, the White House sends out Superman to apprehend Aquaman, and while they are in dialogue, in which Superman pretty much says you aren’t leaving the shores of the U.S. and going back to Atlantis, and I’m Superman and you aren’t so there isn’t much you can do about it, too which Aquaman responds with the aforementioned quote. All in all, the Abnett’s story telling flows well, and the story is engaging, and sets up for some future tension between the surface world and Atlantis. Story gets 4 👍 out of 5 👍

ART: Brad Walker’s  pencils are a good compliment to Abnett’s writing style. As I have said previously, art is very subjective and my criteria is that I know what is being drawn (i.e. a horse looks like a horse and not a dog) and the art jives with the story. Art: 3 👍 out of 5 👍

PRICE: Aquaman comes in at $2.99 an issue, but is published twice a month, so when all is said and done you are paying $5.98 a month for one title. Now, if you are anything like me, if you are going to plunk down almost as much as you would on a new paperback book, that essentially $6 better be worth it. At 32 pages for each issue, we are at nearly 11 cents a page (10.7). For my sensibility, this is a bit steep. Price: 2 👍 out of 5 👍

Rob’s Recommendation: Buy! With the caveat that you will be paying more per month than you used too, but will be getting twice the read.
