The original Splatoon was released on the Wii U in 2015. Nintendo describes the team-based third-person game as an “ink shooter”. The game centers around characters called Inklings who shapeshift between a humanoid form for the surface and a squid form for while swimming through coloured ink. The inks are sprayed or rolled onto surfaces with guns, buckets, or brush-based weapons.
While players can shoot ink at each other during the player-vs-player game modes, the main focus of the PvP matches is to cover the environment with as much ink as possible. Each team is given an ink colour and the team with the most ink on the map wins. The matches can be set as a regular, friendly match or a more competitive ranked match. The ranking system ranges from C- to S+ and earning a higher rank increases the amount of money and experience earned after winning.
Splatoon 2 features many of the same ideas from the original game. Fans of the first game will feel right at home, but newcomers will be able to jump right in without feeling as though they’ve missed something by skipping the first installment. Naturally, there are several new features as well, including local multiplayer, new duel-welded ink pistols, new special attacks for the older weapons, and new music tracks.
Splatoon 2 does not currently have an official release date, but it has been announced that it will be released sometime in the summer of 2017.
