Michael Bell, also known as BellularGaming, recently announced the launch of his ambitious World of Warcraft add-on titled Warcraft Tales. The add-on will change the questing experience from levels 1 to 60 through a complete overhaul of the stories throughout several zones. The old quest scripts are being completely rewritten and voice actors will finally be giving numerous NPCs the ability to speak to players. Additionally, a new quest UI and the new Talking Head Frame from Legion will allow the Warcraft Tales team to rewrite quests so that players can experience the story as they play rather than having an NPC explain everything in a wall of text.
The quest rewrites will be done episodically with episode one launching April 6, 2017. Episodes are expected to be released every 6 weeks. However, monthly releases may be possible if the team receives enough financial support. The project already has 200 backers with earnings of roughly $1,128 a month. Episodes following the human race will be released first and the first episode will begin in Elwynn Forest. After completing the human story from 1 to 60, a horde race overhaul will follow. Donators on the development team’s Patreon page will decide which Horde race will go first through a series of votes.
The project is an incredibly massive undertaking. Even if the team does not completely rewrite the 1 to 60 questing experience for each race, that still leaves them with quests which must be rewritten for over 12 zones. These zones can have over 110 quests which take players all over the map. By taking 6 weeks to develop each episode, the Warcraft Tales team should have enough time to reach their desired release dates. However, some of the longer quest chains could overwhelm them and force them to delay an episode by several weeks. Still, if the team receives enough Patreon funding from fans who enjoy the add-on, they can dedicate more time to the project and hire even more staff to assist them.
There are a lot of World of Warcraft players who are constantly looking for ways to spruce up their experience and find new exciting ways to play their favourite MMO. Michael Bell is once such player and he has some great videos on YouTube sharing how he keeps his WoW questing experience fresh and fun with add-ons. He could be the perfect candidate for running a project aimed towards creating new experiences for this old MMO. He has already been trying to accomplish himself through the add-ons of other people and now he can finally participate in the endeavour as well.
