Black Tiger Steals Heart begins with Danny (Finn Jones) waking up in bed with Colleen (Jessica Henwick). He is not sure where they are, only that they are no longer in her City Dojo. Colleen tells him they are home, and thanks him for saving her life. Meanwhile, Harold (David Wenham) and Joy (Jessica Stroup) discuss how they intend to operate now that she is aware of his new found existence. While reminiscing about Harold’s battle with cancer, he tells her of the heartache he suffered while watching his young children care for him during such a torrid time. They continue to discuss his experiences during the process of death. Before the opening credits roll, Harold persuades Joy to leave and reconsider her decision to blackmail the board of Rand Enterprises, instead of allowing him to do what is necessary for their family. The scene ends with a shot of Kyle (Alex Wyse) dead in a tank in the suite.
Once the credits are completed, we find Colleen showing Danny around Bakuto’s facility. As he thanks Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez) for showing him how to heal Colleen, he begins to divulge information on being the Iron Fist. In return, Bakuto teaches him how to recharge Chi, mentioning how fond Colleen is of him and the philosophy in which the facility abides by, such as honor, respect and the unfair nature of corporations within society.
This scene continues with Bakuto showing Danny an old video from 1940s China, showing a former Iron Fist protecting Kunlun from soldiers of the day. Excited by the prospect of working with an Iron Fist, Bakuto explains how much more Danny can do, and that by his side, the two of them can bring an end to the persecution brought on to people by Gao (Wai Ching Ho).
Joy calls Danny to tell him of Harold’s latest resurrection, giving him the phone to speak about their plan to reclaim Rand Enterprises. Danny declines but swiftly moves to tell him how Gao has been taken care of. In hearing the news, Harold tries to celebrate with the “best single malt in the world”. However, when Joy refuses, Harold decides to react with rage, smashing the bottle on the floor. Bakuto learns of this conversation, saying he requires a full transcript of the conversation.
While scouting the area Danny bumps into Darryl, the boy from the Dojo that worked with Colleen.
He tells Danny how great it is there, however suspicion leads Danny to ask of any areas out of bounds. While investigating one of the areas Darryl has told him about, Danny discovers Gao being held captive. She begins to tell how him he is a prisoner too and that this is only another entity within the Hand.
Bakuto finds Danny speaking with Gao, he tells him he will not find answers from Gao, only further mystery. Danny is taken back to Colleen, however quickly discovers what Gao has said was all true.
He confronts Colleen, questioning her intentions regarding their time together. Although she appears shaken, she says how Gao is separated from what the Hand really is, an extreme version of the Hand truly stand for.
We next return to Harold in his penthouse, he discovers Bakuto at his dining table, offering a truce between the two parties. He tells Bakuto he is in now in charge, offering a new reason for working together: freedom from the agreement between the two.
Confused with how to act, Danny decides to investigate what turns about to be the facility’s surveillance room. In act of rage, he begins to completely trash it. This, according to Bakuto was all a test, one in which he has failed. A fight breaks out between the two, resulting in the appearance of Davos (Sacha Dhawan), a fellow member of Kunlun.
True to his word, Harold goes to meet with Lawrence Wilkins (Clifton Davis), one of the members of the board responsible for the dissolution of Joy/Ward/Danny’s position within the company. Calmly, Harold shows him the material Joy has attained such as photographs of being arrested and files describing his embezzlement of the company’s funds. He suggests that the easy way out would be to commit suicide. Obviously Lawrence refuses to cooperate, resulting in him being shot with the intention of faking his suicide to the authorities.
Back at the facility, Danny & Davos are now fighting their way through the residents in an attempt to escape. Bakuto stabs Danny in the side, causing his frustration to prevent his ability to summon the Iron Fist. Instead, what ensues is probably the coolest showdown between Danny, Davos and countless members of the Hand’s complex.
Fortunately, Colleen proceeds to open the gate for Danny and Davos, allowing enough time for them to be clear by destroying the console to operate it. Bakuto assesses the situation around him, explaining to the injured Darryl that Danny does not need to be killed, he was the future.
In final exchanges of the episode, we find Joy informing the board of Wilkin’s death as well as the circumstances in which the company currently resides. She uses the opportunity to emphasise the need for her and her Brother to be reinstated in order to “steady the ship”. The Board complies with unanimous support. Back at the penthouse, Harold and Joy celebrate their victory in returning to the Rand Enterprises, discussing Joy’s desire to have no more lies between the two of them. Joy confronts her father over the apparent suicide of Wilkins. Harold denies this blankly, stating instead how they need to deal with a man named Bakuto.
The episode ends with Colleen/Danny/Davos roaming the streets of New York. Davos tells Danny they are to return to Kunlun to protect the now open passageway to the area.
Observations
- Ward Meachum does not appear in this episode in any capacity
- Bakuto talks to Danny about the Girls Scout stating their motto is “Be Prepared”. This is, however, incorrect as “Be Prepared” in the motto is for the Boy Scouts
- The original Iron Fist costume is shown in brief during the grainy video taken from China. Although there is no color, the bandana and outfit are clearly visible.
