NETFLIX Announces 2-Season Order for SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Series

Netflix has just announced a 20-episode, two-season, order for an as yet unnamed Sabrina, The Teenage Witch series. This news contradicts the rumors of expanding the Archie universe with a companion series to The CW’s Riverdale. Based on the Archie Comics characters and coming on the heels of the success of the aforementioned Riverdale, the series will be produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Executive Producer/Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be joined by Executive Producer/Director Lee Toland Krieger, as well as Executive Producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Berlanti Productions), Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics).

The series will imagine the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. The series is purportedly inspired by the critically acclaimed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book series, an imprint of Archie Comics, which began in 2014 and focused on Sabrina Spellman during her teenage years in the 1960s. It was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and drawn by Robert Hack.
