RECAP: iZombie – “Zombie Knows Best”

Aaaaaand we’re back! iZombie aired episode 2 of Season 3 last night, and there’s certainly a lot to talk about. So let’s get into it.

– SPOILER WARNING –

This episode focused a lot on Clive, which was very nice to see. He’s been around since the series premiere but never has an episode really delved into his character like this one. After the murder of a kid he knew and the kid’s family, Clive got some great flashbacks in this episode that gave me more insight as to what his character was like before he worked with Liv. He was certainly clueless, as he let a 9-year-old watch Game of Thrones, but that was a funny moment and one that helped satisfy the need for an emotional connection between program and viewer. It worked. It was really emotional to see Clive and Wally bond, and actor Malcolm Goodwin conveyed Clive’s emotion very well.

Liv was on Father Brain this week, and Major was unfortunately on Teenage Girl Brain. Major was hilarious this week when the brain he was on came into play, and the things he says and does are typical of a 15-year-old girl but definitely weird for a grown man. The murder this week? You already know. Stanley Chen and his daughter Cindy were murdered in a car crash, and Liv’s visions cause the suspect to be Cindy’s ex-friend Winslow, who unfriended Cindy on Facebook. After going deeper, it turns out that Winslow was sleeping with her stepfather (I’m not on teenage girl brains, but ew) and Cindy and her dad were going to go to the police. It’s discovered that there’s an app that parents use to spy on and hack into their kids’ phones, and Winslow’s mother Tory is actually the killer.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the murder of Wally and his family continues, which brings Liv and Clive to their next door neighbor. He is part of a message board that knows about zombies and wants to kill them, and he says that someone must have hacked his phone and gained access to where he lives, then gaining Wally’s family’s info and murdering them. Not really sure he’s telling the truth, but I’ll go with it.

– REVIEW –

This episode of iZombie was very good. It featured some of the best comedic bits that the series has ever given, as well as some of the most emotional. It was really good to see a lot of focus on Clive. He’s a main character, but rarely does he get a deep investment in his character. In addition to that, the murder of Cindy and Stanley was a compelling subplot. I really enjoy how this series balances a well-written story and your typical case-of-the-week, so that both get enough time to develop characters and hold viewers’ interest. I’m going to give “Zombie Knows Best” an 8.5/10.
