Injustice 2 is the latest game from Netherrealm Studios, developer of games such as Mortal Kombat, and of course, the first Injustice game. We’ve seen superhero fighting games before, in the form of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and so on. Injustice 2 is most certainly the best DC game in quite some time (since Batman: Arkham Knight [2015], and before that – Batman: Arkham City [2011]). I’ve always had a sweet spot for fighting games, but ones where I can pit my favorite comic book heroes/villains against each other? Take my money! So, without further ado, here’s my review of Injustice 2!
Injustice: Gods Among Us was one of the best games of 2013. The game was fun, fresh, and offered a good story counterpart for the more story-oriented players. It had its flaws, but it was very surprising. Injustice 2? Even better. It works in so many ways and I love it.
The first thing I want to talk about is the new character additions. I mean, come on! How can anyone refuse a game that includes Deadshot, Swamp Thing, Captain Cold, and Gorilla Grodd as playable characters? As you can probably guess, those aren’t the only new additions to the game’s roster. It is truly amazing to see so many iconic DC Comics heroes and villains duking it out. The new add-on system is also quite interesting. There are people out there who definitely aren’t big fans of it, and I can see where they’re coming from, but there are things I like in addition to the things I don’t. For one, it’s fun to mix and match different character head, arm, leg, and torso variations. However, I do miss the simplicity of picking and choosing the general skins for each character.
The story mode is lacking a bit of what made the first game’s so great, but it benefits from people loving the first one, so they’ll play the second anyway. It’s lacking in originality, but the voice acting and writing are very good. Plus, if you complete the story, you get Brainiac as a playable character (who, by the way, packs a serious punch).
For those who have played the first game, S.T.A.R. Labs is replaced by the Multiverse, a mode where you can do missions in the “infinite” number of universes. It’s pretty fun, and a good counterpart if you get bored with playing classic single player modes. The online is also fun but can be a bit frustrating for players new to the genre of fighting games.
The graphics, as can be expected by this point in the 8th Generation of Gaming, are pretty freakin’ amazing. Each character is incredibly detailed, and the environments provide a substantial background for the player to smash their opponent into. The new “Super Moves” are also pretty fun to perform and watch.
THE VERDICT
Injustice 2 is one of the best games to come out this year. The best part? It’s available across all current-generation platforms! You can enjoy the game whether you have a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC. I’m going to give it a 9/10.
