Tyler Perry’s gripping new film Straw is now available to stream on Netflix, and it’s already turning heads for its timely story, powerful performances, and standout ensemble cast. The drama marks another significant release under Perry’s multi-year, first-look deal with Netflix — and this one may just be his most emotionally charged yet.
At the heart of Straw is Taraji P. Henson, who stars as Janiyah, a devoted single mother pushed to the edge on the worst day of her life. As events spiral out of control, Janiyah finds herself not only struggling to survive but becoming the center of suspicion in a world that seems determined to overlook her.
Sherri Shepherd takes on a rare dramatic role as Nicole, a bank manager forced to choose between policy and compassion, while Teyana Taylor delivers a compelling performance as Officer Kay Raymond, a negotiator whose empathy may be Janiyah’s only lifeline.
The film’s supporting cast brings a rich depth to the story, featuring a dynamic lineup of seasoned and rising talent. Glynn Turman, celebrated for his powerful roles in The Wire and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, adds gravitas to the ensemble. Comedy legend Sinbad takes on a rare dramatic role, showcasing a more serious side of his range. Rockmond Dunbar, known for Prison Break and 9-1-1, brings intensity and presence to the screen. And Mike Merrill, who has steadily gained recognition for his work in The Black Hamptons and All the Queen’s Men, brings both charm and emotional complexity to his role. Ashley Versher adds layers to her character with quiet strength, and Shalèt Monique — a rising star I had the pleasure of meeting at the Story Rewrite event in May — brings authenticity and heart to every scene she’s in. Together, this talented group elevates Straw with performances that feel as honest as they are unforgettable.

Written and directed by Perry, Straw was filmed in Atlanta and produced alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland. The film joins Perry’s growing slate of Netflix projects, including the WWII epic The Six Triple Eight and the recently announced drama series Beauty in Black.
While Straw tackles serious themes, Perry says it isn’t meant to preach. “I didn’t set out to teach anything,” he shared. “But if people walk away realizing that everyone’s going through something… that would be powerful.”
Ultimately, Straw is a tense, moving drama about humanity, empathy, and how one small act of kindness can stop someone from breaking.
You can stream Straw now on Netflix. Prepare for an emotional ride — and bring tissues.
