Welcome to Second Union’s “Films To Make You Festive“. For the majority of December, Second Union will be talking about our favourite “festive films” in an attempt to get our readers ready for the holiday season. Expect action, adventure and all the nostalgia a Christmas period can possibly produce!
Until recently, Christmas to me was always a time to reminisce about the good times and enjoy being with those I care for the most. However, since the birth
Produced by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a relatively irreverent version of a seasonal tale that manages to manifest the same joy and bewilderment experienced by all of us at one point or another.
Struggling to find his way out of the monotony of Halloweentown’s endless cycle of celebration, Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington (or Pumpkin as he was affectionately called in our house) stumbles upon a glorious world unlike anything he has seen before – Christmastown!
Accompanied by an array of instantly memorable songs such as “This Is Halloween”, “What’s This?” and “Kidnap the Santy Claws”, this modern classic boasts a simple tale of a man finding his place in the world while sharing their love for this most glorious time of year.
On first viewing, The Nightmare Before Christmas is simple, enjoyable and utterly unforgettable. However, the longer you take to digest this film, the more you realize is actually happening throughout. With subtle nods to classic Horrors such as Dracula and Frankenstein as well an appearance from a monster we won’t see again until 2001’s Monsters Inc., it would be almost criminal to say you’ve only seen it once.
Finally, The Nightmare Before Christmas cannot be discussed without mentioning the sheer skill on display from these exceptional animators. Almost entirely stop-motion, a crew of over 100 animators spent over 2 years bringing together a film that lasts well under the 90-minute bracket for most films. And the result? Well, nothing short of sensational! Its evergreen themes, joyous performances, and toe-tapping tunes make The Nightmare Before Christmas a film to not only make YOU festive, but the whole family from newborn to Nana.
